Judith O’Connor was born on May 9th, 1940 to Mary and James. She grew up in West Hartford, CT along with her siblings Cathy, Mary, and Peggy. Young Judy was influenced by the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk at an early age as a student at St. Thomas the Apostle and she first entered the community at the age of 18. Six years later, in 1964, she professed her final vows and was originally known as Sr. Jamesetta to honor her father.
Sr. Judy’s life was centered around education - both as a student and as an educator. She earned both a bachelors and masters degree from St. John’s University and completed post graduate courses at Boston College. She served as a teacher in Our Lady of Grace (Howard Beach, NY) and Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Ozone Park, NY). She also served at Holy Family High School (Huntington, NY), where she was the Assistant Principal in addition to being a beloved and respected teacher, and was the principal of Stamford Catholic High School (Stamford, CT). It would be difficult to count the number of classes she taught or the number of students' lives she enriched.
Sister was also called to serve the Ursuline community with great joy and dedication. She was the Provincial Leader from 1988 to 1996 and the General Superior in Brussels, Belgium from 1996 to 2008. An avid traveler with deep appreciation for other cultures, she spent time on sabbatical in Sydney, Australia when her term as General Superior had ended and traveled extensively through Europe and India. Later, Sister became the Administrator at Tabor Retreat House before serving as Provincial Councillor. She spent the last years of her life as the Treasurer for the US Province.
Sr. Judy, with her quick wit and kind, reassuring smile, was called home to eternal life on March 4th, 2025 after an extended illness. She had been an Ursuline Sister for 66 years at the time of her passing. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk (www.tildonkursuline.org).
