The Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk announce the passing of Sr. Mary James Fox on December 28th, 2022.
Born in Brooklyn to James and Helen, Mary Joan Fox was baptized in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Brooklyn. When she was 17 years old, she entered the congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk in Blue Point.
Soon after professing her perpetual vows six years later, Sr. Mary James embarked on a 26-year ministry in education. She taught at Our Lady of Grace (Howard Beach, NY), Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Ozone Park, NY), St. William the Abbot (Seaford, NY) and Our Lady Star of the Sea (Stamford, CT), where she also served as Principal.Her last teaching position was at Holy Family High School (Huntington, NY) where she was an instrumental member of the Math Department from 1968 to 1979.
Known for her superior mathematical abilities, Sr. James’ ministry turned to bookkeeping, serving for 24-years at Our Lady of Mercy (Hicksville, NY) and another seven years at Our Lady of Hope (Middle Village, NY).Following her official retirement, Sr. James continued to serve in her community’s Business Office, proving to be an invaluable resource.
Sister earned a bachelor's degree from St. John’s University and master’s degrees from St. John’s University and Randolph-Macon College.
In addition to the Ursuline Sisters and Associates of Tildonk, Sr. James is survived by her sister, Helen Fox Brown, and seven nieces and nephews, 14 grandnieces and grandnephews, and six great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
At the time of her death, Sr. James Fox has been an Ursuline Sister for 72 years. Her life will be celebrated with a wake on Wednesday, January 4th at Our Lady of the Snow Mother Church in Blue Point, NY from 9:30-10:45am followed by a funeral mass at 11am.
